The fact that a random component intervenes in the course of the game does not directly make it a game of luck in the proper sense. Likewise, the use of money (real or represented by chips) as a tactical tool does not fully make it a game of chance. The player’s ability, be it tactical, strategic or psychological, prevails over the luck factor in determining success in the game. The Rules of Poker
Let’s assume that to explain how to play poker, reference will be made below to the American variant – meaning Texas Hold’em Poker – of the game both for the composition of the deck of cards and for the value of the combinations.
The Players and the Tables . the numerous of wagers can vary from two, for head-to-head sport (furthermore known as heads-up), until ten in one table competitions or currency tournaments (those with actual money stakeholders). Multi-table tournaments do not have a maximum number of participants and, unless a limit specified by the tournament organizers, there can be competitions with over 1000 participants spread over multiple tables.
The Deck of Cards . For the American variants of poker, a classic French 52-card deck is used. Jokers are therefore not included in this. The cards are divided into four groups called “suits” – hearts, diamonds, clubs, spades – of 13 cards each. Each suit includes nine cards numbered 2-10, three face cards (Jack, Queen and King) and an Ace. The value of the cards is, in ascending order, 2, 3, … 10, J (jack), Q (queen), K (king), Ace. Note that, unlike many other games, the suits all have the same value! Therefore an Ace of Hearts counts exactly as an Ace of Spades or any other suit.
Purpose of the Game . The aim of every poker game is to win the prize pool placed in the center of the table which is, in jargon, called a pot. The pot is the amount of money or chips wagered by players during each game round.
